In 1923, on a hill overlooking beautiful Cayuga Lake, a six-hole golf course was built on the Wells College campus. Edward Hayton was the first groundskeeper and PGA professional in 1938. In 1960 the well known golf course architect Robert Trent Jones Sr. redesigned several holes. Wells College Golf Club is open to the public from dawn until dusk, from early March through early November, and offers club and cart rentals. The clubhouse provides snacks, beer, liquor, and other refreshments. Enjoy a refreshment or something from our kitchen after your round on our outdoor deck overlooking the first tee where you can enjoy watching golfers teeing it up or a beautiful Cayuga Lake sunset. The redesign by Robert Trent Jones, Sr. (husband of Wells alumna Ione Davis Jones ‘31), added to the beauty and challenge of the golf experience He remade holes 1, 2, and 8, adding his signature style of strategically placed bunkers and grass-mounded greens. Recently, the course has finally received the care it deserves by our Superintendent, Scott Winkleman, with fresh bunkering, new conditioning, and attentive upkeep. Come out and enjoy Robert Trent, Sr.’s design as well as the beauty and playability of our updated and scenic nine-hole track. You will be glad you did!
